Glanageenty is just over 9km from Castleisland and approximately 12km from Tralee in Co. Kerry.
The 15th Earl of Desmond took refuge here in these woods with a number of his men after the Desmond Rebellion. He dodged the English forces for a number of months until he was betrayed by one of his own subjects, Maurice O' Moriarty. He was subsequently beheaded in 1583. His severed head was sent to London and placed on the Bridge, as a warning to would-be traitors. His body rests in the graveyard at Kilananama, close to Castleisland. There is a memorial located close by. During the Irish Civil War, Stephen Fuller, the lone survivor of the Ballyseedy massacre in 1923 hid out in the area.
There are two National Looped walks within this forest.

How do I get there?
Glanageenty Woods are located just 3km from the N21 between Tralee and Castleisland. Using O' Riarda's bar as a landmark, take the side road directly beside the pub. Take a left at the T-junction at top of this road followed by the second right. Continue on straight until you get to the forest entrance - there is limited parking here, if you continue down the hill a short distance and take a sharp right at the crossroads, there is car park with greater capacity.
