Forests for People

Coillte is Ireland’s largest provider of outdoor recreation with 260 recreational forests nationwide, including 3,000km of way marked walking trails, 12 forest parks and six mountain bike centres. Recreational maps are available at each site and can be downloaded here.

We have an open forest policy which means all walkers are free to visit any of our forests according to the Leave No Trace principles.

Coillte’s lands have been used by communities and businesses to develop and support local and community infrastructure from sports clubs to wind farms and other recreation facilities.

Coillte’s new forestry strategic vision aims to enable the creation of 1,200 direct and indirect new jobs in rural communities to support the just transition to a low carbon economy in Ireland.

Guidelines on access to Coillte Forests

All access to our forests is by permission only. Individuals are welcome to walk in all forests and to cycle only on routes waymarked for cycling. All other access requires a permit (motorised, horse-back, all organised and charitable events, any guiding or teaching or coaching activities which are part of your business, etc).

Keep an eye out for signs where we might be working in the forest - we will usually show you an alternate route for your walk or cycle.

We want you to have a great time exploring our forests, but we do expect you to look out for your own safety and respect other users of the forest.
