Tibradden Mountain Trail (Kilmashogue)

Trail description

The trail goes from the R116 at the forest entrance to the summit of Tibradden mountain and continues straight on past the summit and downhill until it meet the Wicklow Way. The walker may then turn back and return to the start point by the same route (assumed in this description) or join the Wicklow Way. This walk is recommended for the panoramic view from the top of Tibradden.

Starting from the barrier at the forest entrance follow the hard surface road through to the second barrier and from there continue straight on. You well see farmland to the left and below and pine stands on the right. The track begins to rise gently for about five minutes or so after which you will get your first glimpse of Dublin Bay. Bear right staying with the track and the gentle climb continues through pine, spruce and some larch planting. The track becomes enclosed on both sides at this point. Ahead you will see the forested slopes of Cruagh. Follow the forest road up to the left ignoring the track heading off on the right. After about 100m. bear right (ignoring the track straight ahead which goes downhill) and continue uphill, still climbing gently. The track soon narrows, becomes stoney and enclosed by furze and heathers. This is in fact a narrow rocky watercourse and in wet conditions extra care should be exercised. You will soon see the peaty expanse of Tibradden mountain on your left.

As you ascend leaving the forest behind the expanse of Cruagh and Glendoo mountain, Glencullen, The Great and Little Sugar Loaf, Wicklow Head, Two Rock and Three Rock mountains come into view. As you reach the summit you are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and Dublin city, Dublin Bay, Howth and Ireland's Eye, weather permitting!
If you wish you can follow the highly visible track for some twenty minutes or so until you reach the Wicklow way (Waymarked yellow) as it passes south towards Glencullen or north towards Two Rock, Three Rock and Kilmashogue. This track is very wet and peaty at first after which it becomes a rocky watercourse so again caution is advised.
