Sand Dune Trail

Trail description

This beautiful but easy trail allows all visitors to Ards to experience at first hand one of the real treasures of the park, it's maritime environment. The sand dune trail, a multi access way marked route,  starts at the main car park and heads towards the beach area where it runs right to follow the coast in a northerly direction. At the junction, the trail veers left and moves into the small wood that clings to this rocky headland. The wood is a  mixture of conifer trees and broadleaf trees. The conifers are maritime pine well suited to growing in a harsh environment where salt laden winds whip down the bay from the north. You will also notice how the broadleaf trees are sculpted by these winds giving them a very one sided look. The trail  emerges from the wood into a special area in the park - the sand dune complex. Here, we have constructed a board walk section to take you to the viewpoint over Clonmass Bay and the Back Strand. Sand dunes are fragile ecosystems ,so, please stay on the board walk. Retrace your steps to the car park.
