Monicknew Valley Walk

Trail description

From the trailhead, head up the hill on the track behind the car-park to start. The trail leads you through massive Sitka spruce (nearly 100 years old) and on up to a forest road above. At the first junction, there are 2 alternative routes you can take. Follow the road to the left for the longer walk (3.5 kms) or continue straight on, to descend to the river bank and back to the car-park for a shorter walk (2kms). This junction is clearly marked on the trail. If taking the longer route, you will be climbing for nearly 2 kms but you will be rewarded with excellent views south over counties Offaly and Laois and of bogs and lakes below. The upper section of the trail can be shrouded in mist regularly, so take suitable clothes with you. Crossing two footbridges will bring you into high spruce once more and the forest road descends down to the car-park to finish.
